Your Mac is infected with 5 viruses! scam

What is Your Mac is infected with 5 viruses! scam

Your Mac is infected with 5 viruses! scam is a very common trick scammers use to fool users into downloading rogue anti-virus or other highly questionable programs. It’s a very common scam that claims your Mac has been infected with some kind of virus(es) in order to scare you into engaging with the scam. This particular one will say that in order to deal with the viruses, you need to download an update for your anti-virus software. If you do download it, you’d end up with either a potentially unwanted program (PUP) or outright malware. In reality, downloading anything is unnecessary because there are no viruses on your Mac.

Your Mac is infected with 5 viruses! scam

There could be two reasons why you’d be redirected to the site displaying the scam. You were either browsing a high-risk website and clicked on something that triggered a redirect, or your computer is infected with adware. If it’s adware, you’d need to get rid of it to remove Your Mac is infected with 5 viruses! scam pop-up from your screen permanently. If the adware is not removed, the redirect will keep popping up over and over again.

Adware is the likely culprit behind the redirect to the scam

Certain sites are considered high-risk due to the low-quality ads they expose users to. It’s usually sites that host pornography, pirated content, etc., that have those kinds of ads and may trigger redirects to sites showing scams. If you’re going to browse those sites, have adblocker enabled so it can block the ads.

However, if you are constantly redirected to the scam even when browsing safe sites, your computer may be infected with adware. Adware is a rather minor infection that mainly shows ads and triggers redirects. Users usually install it accidentally when installing freeware. Free programs come with additional offers attached, and they are permitted to install alongside unless users manually deselect them. Those offers are usually adware, browser hijackers and potentially unwanted programs (PUPs). Many users miss the offers when installing free programs because they are purposely hidden. To make them visible, users need to opt for Advanced (Custom) settings instead of Default. If those settings show that something has been added, all users would need to do is uncheck the boxes.

Adware isn’t a particularly dangerous infection but it’s still annoying to deal with. And it’s much easier to prevent its installation than it is to get rid of it once it’s inside.

Is your Mac actually infected with viruses

When you get redirected to the site displaying the scam, numerous pop-ups will appear, all more or less saying that your Mac is infected with a virus. The initial pop-up will display Norton security anti-virus home screen, the second pop-up will show a quick scan window with 5 viruses found, and a third window will say “Your Mac is infected with 5 viruses!” and claim you need to download an update to get rid of the viruses. The final alert will say that it’s a legitimate Mac OS Alert and that your Mac is infected. The whole scam is made to appear as if Norton anti-virus is actually showing you the alerts instead of them being ads.

The scam will claim that “To remove all detected viruses, you must update your antivirus software”. You are asked to press “Proceed” and then “Download” to download the supposed update. However, instead of an update, you would download some kind of PUP, most likely a rogue anti-virus program that will want you to buy its full version. Worst case scenario, you will end up with some kind of malware.

It should be mentioned that no matter how realistic the alerts about viruses are, they’re a scam if they appear in your browser. Your browser is not able to detect malware on your computer, nor will it warn you about viruses. Only trust anti-virus software to show you legitimate virus alerts.
