Yahoo Powered – How to remove [Explained]
About Yahoo Powered
Yahoo Powered is a legitimate browser extensions but can be classified as a potentially unwanted program (PUP) by some security experts. The reasons for the PUP classification are its installation method and unwanted changes made to the browser. The extension may appear attached to your browser out of the blue with you having no idea how it managed to install. This usually happens when users install free software and fail to notice that some kind of PUP is attached to it. We will explain this and how to avoid future unwanted installations in more detail in the following section of the report.
When the extension installs, it will change your browser’s settings and set a Yahoo site as your homepage and search engine. If the extension installed via freeware bundling, these changes were essentially performed without your permission. Yahoo is a safe site to use but you should not be forced into using it by an extension that you did not mean to install. If you did not mean to install the extension, we strongly recommend you delete Yahoo Powered and go back to normal browsing. There is no reason to put up with these changes if you did not agree with them in the first place.
Software bundling is how PUPs install
Commonly, free software comes together with extra offers, which are attached in a way that allows them to install alongside the program without requiring explicit permission. This is called software bundling, and is a popular method of distribution among unwanted program developers. However, because it’s quite deceptive, it’s not uncommon for programs that use this method to be classified as potentially unwanted.
It’s not difficult to prevent these unwanted installations, as long as you pay attention to how you install freeware. During installation, choose Advanced (Custom) settings and not Default or Basic. Default settings will conceal all offers and allow them to install. Advanced, on the other hand, will make them visible and allow you to deselect all of them. All you really need to do is uncheck the boxes of those offers, and you can continue the installation.
Keep in mind that most free programs will come with these extra offers, and unless you want your computer to be filled with junk program, you need to deselect them. Some of them may seem useful at first glance but you should always be skeptical.
What exactly is Yahoo Powered
Yahoo Powered will change your browser’s settings as soon as it is added to your browser, whether you’re using Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge. Changes include your homepage and search engine being set to search.yahoo.com. If you perform a search via your browser’s address bar, your search results would also be generated via Yahoo. While the PUP is installed, these changes will not be reversible because it will just undo whatever it is you change. If you did not install the extension willingly, this can be quite annoying.
It goes without saying that Yahoo is a completely legitimate website and search engine, and you are free to use it at will. However, there is no need to put up with it if your settings were changed by an extension you did not mean to install.
PUPs that have browser hijacker characteristics often try to redirect you to sponsored websites in order to generate traffic and revenue. Results generated via questionable search engines often lead users to highly dubious websites, which is why it’s usually not recommended to use search engines provided by browser hijackers. However, since Yahoo Powered sets search.yahoo.com as the default search engine, you can safely use it if you wish as it is safe.
