InitiatorField adware Removal
What is InitiatorField adware
InitiatorField adware is a rogue program, classified as adware, that can infect Mac computers. It also has browser hijacker characteristics, meaning it can change browser’s settings without your explicit permission and set its promoted site as your homepage. With this infection on your Mac, you will have a new homepage, will be forced to use a questionable search engine, be shown all kinds of ads and redirected to potentially dangerous websites promoting scams or malware.
Because it doesn’t directly harm the computer, it’s not the most dangerous infection you can get. However, it’s not harmless either. It can expose you to all kinds of potentially dangerous ads and redirect to highly dubious sites. If you notice this program installed among your Applications, we strongly recommend you delete InitiatorField adware as soon as possible.
It’s very likely that you did not install InitiatorField knowingly. What likely happened is the hijacker/adware was attached to some free software you installed as an extra offer, and you did not notice. This method of installation is called software bundling, and it’s the reason why these unwanted programs are so widespread. We will explain more about software bundling in the following section of the report.
Browser hijacker/Adware installation
If you find a browser hijacker, adware or a potentially unwanted program (PUP) installed on your computer, you probably recently installed a free program. Free programs often come with additional offers attached to them, and if the offers are not deselected during installation, they are permitted to install alongside the program without requiring additional permission from you. Because this method essentially allows unwanted programs to install without users’ permission, software bundling is quite controversial. Fortunately, as long as you pay attention to how you install free programs, you will be able to prevent all unwanted installations.
When installing freeware, make sure you opt for Advanced (Custom) settings when given the option. While the setup window will say that using Default or Basic settings is recommended, that is not true. Default settings will essentially allow anything added to install without informing you. However, if you opt for Advanced, all added offers will become visible and you will be given the option of deselecting all of them. Simply uncheck the boxes of those offers and continue the installation. Do this every time you install freeware because otherwise, your computer will quickly fill up with junk programs.
What does the adware do?
Because InitiatorField adware comes with browser hijacker characteristics, it will change your browser’s settings. Your browser, whether you’re using Google Chrome, Safari or Mozilla Firefox, will load a homepage you did not set and force you to use a search engine you did not choose. These changes to your browser will be irreversible while the infection remains present.
The adware part of the infection will expose you to loads of advertisements, from banners to pop-ups and redirects. You will be redirected to all kinds of questionable websites and shown weird pop-ups. You need to be careful to not engage with sites that you end up on because that could be dangerous. Adware is known to show users tech-support scams which ask users to call fake tech-support numbers. The scams claim that there is something wrong with users’ computers and that the only way to fix the issue is to call the number. When users do call, they end up dealing with tech-support scammers who try to force users to pay for useless services. Know that these alerts about viruses that appear in your browser will always be scams. Similar alerts may also ask you to install a program that would help fix the alleged issue.
Keep in mind that adware collects information about users, records what sites they visit, what they search for, their IP addresses, etc. The information is later shared with third-parties and used to generate more personalized ads for you to click on.
