Calendar virus Iphone, MAC [Explained]

What is a Calendar virus

Calendar virus refers to an iPhone virus that tries to trick users into clicking on ads. It’s a rather intrusive virus that basically puts ads as events into the calendar app and spams users with never ending notifications. Calendar virus isn’t a dangerous infection, as long as you don’t click on the ads in your calendar app. The ads will mostly be spam but it’s also possible to see phishing attempts and alerts leading to malicious sites, thus it’s best to not click on any of the notifications.

Calendar virus

The reason you are seeing the spam in your calendar app is likely because you clicked on something when visiting a questionable website. You were probably tricked into giving the site permission to send you spam or opened an attachment/received an invite in an email or a text message. Fortunately, this means an actual infection isn’t present on your computer. However, removing the Calendar virus spam can be a little tricky. The last section of the report will explain this.

Calendar spam invites you to click on questionable pages

If you started seeing spam in your calendar, the most likely cause is you received a spam email invitation and clicked on it. This is why it’s best to avoid clicking on spam email. If you receive an unsolicited email, particularly if the email address looks suspicious, you should not interact with it. You could have also been redirected to a certain website that tricked you into adding a calendar to your Calendar app.

The spam then gets added to your calendar as events. It’s often the case that these “events” will be added to all days, multiple times. So you may get 6-10 notifications a day. Being constantly spammed by annoying messages will certainly get on your nerves pretty quickly. The messages will be very obvious spam such as “Click NOW to Secure your iPhone”, “Your iPhone Might Be Exposed to Viruses”, “Try Apple News+ free”, etc. You may also get more sneaky notifications like “… Sent You 5 Pictures”. These notifications invite you to click on links, which lead to highly questionable websites.

By clicking on one such link, you could be exposing yourself to potentially harmful content. You may be redirected to phishing sites that want your iCloud login credentials, which would allow them to access your account. But most of the links will lead you to various scams aiming to get you to pay for fraudulent services. Overall, do not trust any notification you get in your calendar app, no matter how tempting they may be.

These spam alerts in the Calendar app mainly target users who have less knowledge about scams and how they work. Users may see a notification on their screen claiming that have won some kind of prize. If users click on it, they could be taken to a site that asks them to put in their personal information and pay some sum of money to supposedly receive the prize. These kinds of giveaways are always fake, and usually just an attempt to get users’ personal information for future scamming.

How to remove Calendar virus

The good news is that there isn’t an actual infection on your computer. However, you will still need to delete Calendar virus spam. Open your Calendar app and click on Calendars at the bottom. There will be a list of calendars that you can manage. If there is something you do not recognize, click the “i” to get more information. If, at closer inspection, it’s not familiar to you, scroll down to the bottom and press “Delete Calendar”. This should delete the spam from your calendar app. Next, open Settings -> Safari, toggle on “Block Pop-ups” and “Fraudulent Website Warning”. Click Advanced -> Website data -> Remove All Website Data.

In the future, ignore or just delete emails and messages from unknown senders with invitations, do not even click “Decline”. You should also regularly check what calendars you have in your Calendar app. Any unfamiliar ones should be deleted. You should also be careful about visiting questionable domains. If you do get redirected somewhere, do not click on anything and just close the tab.
